As a long haul trucker and a pilot, I often discuss GPS, and the first part of the argument will consist of whether or not it should even be used. In my opinion it is just another tool -- a tool used to navigate the roads, and such tools have been used for centuries. I imagine that in the days of star navigation maps were regarded much like GPS. It really is nice having a piece of equipment telling you where to go, but it must also be considered that the directions it gives may not apply to you. It would be nice, without a doubt, if the GPS took into account the size of your vehicle, the weight, and other aspects in an effort to keep you off of roads where you are not allowed. This particular GPS has never sent me in the wrong direction, and I realize that in a truck, being lost can be a terrible thing. As I said before, there are certain roads that a trucker will need to avoid, and becoming lost on them could cause serious problems. It occurs to me that a resulting ticket would cost just as much if not ten times more than this GPS system, and I personally find this to be invaluable.

The Garmin 465 has been more than acceptable for my husband, an over the road trucker and it is well designed for professional truck drivers. You can actually input your truck type along with the load you are carrying. With this information, the Garmin will be able to direct you.

This GPS system is actually the second Garmin device I have purchased, and I do enjoy the ability to switch between my 5th Wheel/Truck Combo and my car. The GPS device takes the dimensions of your vehicle into account and through this it will determine just which route you should actually take. The device is a little expensive, and I wish they would drop that price if only a little, but so far it performs admirably. Though this is my second Garmin purchase, I have not used their other GPS devices which means I cannot compare it with their others. Like others I have found that used this device updating maps is a bit painful, and to be perfectly honest, I would think that lifetime map updates should be a part of the package considering the price paid.
