Garmin has been close to might heart for quite a while, and I actually bought a number of these for my own
company service vans. My technicians love them.
To say that these units have nice features would be an understatement. The Lane Assist feature will actually
tell you which lane to be in when approaching intersections which actually prevents you from having to make a
sudden lane change on a busy road which is actually a great help. Interestingly enough, the speed of our vehicles
is tracked on the GPS unit which saves is quite a bit of trouble. We actually discovered that the GPS unit is more
accurate than the speedometer in the dashboard!
The "Where am I" feature is very nice. By pushing it you can get your location, which is quite helpful if you
need directions over the phone.
There is a traffic alert feature but I have not found it to be incredibly useful. My guess is that it would
depend on a local system to upload traffic conditions. In some of the more populated areas, this might be a bit
more useful.
To put it simply, this is a great value for the money spent and it has plenty of features!
I recently took this on a three thousand mile road trip and I used it quite a bit. Now while it did work it was
fine, but there were times when it would crash three to four times every day. Aside from that there were no
problems and we're not sure whether this is related to hardware or software. In any case we do plan on sending it
back which will hopefully fix some of the feature issues.
Once I contacted Garmin they advised me that there was actually a software issue, and by updating the firmware I
was able to regain the use of my GPS system. The instructions they sent were very detailed and the device actually
works great now!
When we took this GPS on vacation this summer it actually did every single thing that others have complained
about. It turned off, it locked up, and soon we were forced to replace it. Amazon was great about replacing it, and
the replacement unit actually worked just fine.
If your purpose is to use this for lane assist then you should probably understand that it does not work too
well for this purpose. It did work about two times, but in many cities it would not activate at all. In spite of
these shortcomings we actually loved the device.
Make sure you check your settings as instructing it to avoid traffic will undoubtedly direct you to some rather
strange roads. We eventually changed it, and it worked just fine. We are quite sure that this issue is not
restricted to this GPS unit, and that it can happen on virtually any device.
