All my expectations were met by my TomTom VIA GPS. Its screen is large and easy to read, and the settings
are easy to set up to my preferences. I expected it to give me accurate directions, and it did. Some
GPS systems have a delay before they give you instructions. That can be bad when you need directions quickly,
but this TomTom's verbal instructions were speedy. You get the next instruction as soon as you leave the
freeway or make a turn.
I also think the way the TomTom tells you which lane to be in, so you're ready for the next turn, is very
helpful.
All in all, the verbal commands work well. You can get addresses, gas stations, restaurants and previous
addresses this way. It only made one mistake - when I told it to give me directions to the closest
Chic-fil-A, it asked me if I said "Chevrolet." Once I repeated my request more clearly, it brought up the
directions to the closest Chic-fil-A and started instructing me.
This TomTom GPS is easy to use. Verbal commands are prompted when necessary, and they're easy to
learn. Although I've accessed the traffic information I haven't been told of any traffic issues or
accidents. One thing I have noticed is that when I first turn it on during a break in a trip, it sometimes
takes a while to lock onto a GPS signal. I don't know why.
To me, this GPS is better than a $100 unit.
Last weekend we took a drive down to South Carolina's Low Country. The TomTom Via made our trip a lot more
pleasant. To begin with, we would have been stuck in traffic on busy roads instead of being able to take the
more scenic shortcut through Francis Marion Forest. My husband and I both enjoyed this beautiful route
between Charleston and McClellanville. We never knew it existed before using our TomTom.
Here's what we think are some of the best things about this GPS:
* It's easy to use. You don't need to be a geek to be able to operate it and follow the
directions.
* It's thinner and lighter than our previous GPS, so it looks nicer and it's easier to handle.
It also stayed on the window and didn't fall off the entire drive, which to me is a big advantage.
* The voice seemed incredibly "real" and was clear and easy to understand (we used the female
voice).
* It was easy to understand the directions, which were accurate. The name of the next street is
displayed in the upper right portion of the screen. Also, if you're driving on a multi-lane road, the TomTom tells
you to switch into the correct lane.
* Like other GPS devices, the TomTom gives you an estimated time of arrival and tells you how
many minutes are left to your destination.
* When it told us to make a turn, it used all the road's names. Roads sometimes have more than
one name, so this feature is very helpful.
* Once or twice we drove faster than the speed limit, but the screen alerted us by displaying
the speed in red!
* I like the graphic of the little car driving down the roads. That's probably just a "girl
thing," though.
* Like other GPS units, the TomTom provides current information on your options for dining,
lodging and refueling your car.
I tried really hard to come up with things we didn't like, but I couldn't think of any. I wouldn't
hesitate to recommend the TomTom to anyone who is looking for an easy to use, light, attractive GPS. It gets
four stars from me!
